Introducing Sabrina From Color Castles

Today I'm talking to the awesome Sabrina from the blog Color Castles

Tell us a little more about yourself Sabrina?

Hi, my name is Sabrina. I’m a 27-year-old German photographer, Multimedia and Communication student and blogger. I love books, great TV shows & movies, inspiring podcasts, travelling and I constantly try to learn new and interesting things. ♥

What was it that got you into blogging?

It was way back in 2006/07 when I spent most of my time in the so-called “GFX scene”. I don’t really know how well known this term was in the English speaking countries back then. Now it’s mostly used for other kind of websites. Maybe shizoo-design.de sounds familiar to you. However, I worked on my own website and on Shizoo at the same time. We created icons, signatures, website templates, Photoshop brushes and tutorials for other people and we loved it. I enjoyed writing and creating things for others so much that I wanted to combine it with something personal andt hat’s how I started my first blog.

Can you tell us a little more about Color Castles?

Color Castles is still in its infancy. I started the blog in February 2015 because I didn’t have one for quite some time and I wanted to be productive on the internet again. Right now the blog is about everything I love and that inspires me. So every category on it builds a colorful home – my personal “color castles” so to speak – for all the things I like and want to share with the world to inspire and motivate others and of course, simply just for having fun.

Apart from running your blog what do you get up to?

Since I’m still a student, I can afford only working for my studies, the blog and since three months I also work as a translator to increase my student loan a bit :)

What is it that keeps you inspired when you hit a slump?

Music I love, inspiring podcasts, books, movies, tv-shows… quite a long list, but that’s it. Works every single time for me.

What is your favourite thing about blogging?

The thing I enjoy most about blogging is to share my thoughts and feelings with other people. I especially like to tell stories that combine experiences from my own life, with advice for other people. I also love the photography part, which comes a bit short on my blog at the moment since I’m currently living abroad and I don’t have all the necessary equipment with me.

Do you have any advice for young photographers?

Learn the basics, know your camera well and then practice, practice, practice. I’m a trained photographer, but that means nothing. In fact, I wouldn’t suggest anybody to waste their time in an apprenticeship where you’re just used as cheap labor. At least in Germany that’s mostly the case. With photography, it’s the same than with any other skill. Use what you have, go out and try your best. Like this, you will become better and better. Just believe in yourself.

How do you keep writers block at bay?

I always collect several blog post ideas and whenever I feel like I don’t really know what to write about, I just check my list. Most of the time, that works just fine for me. If there ever comes a time when writers block really hits me hard, then the best you can do is to just take a break for a while. Distance yourself for some time and when you’re refreshed and ready, come back and give it your all.

What are some of your favourite blogs at the moment?

I’m always a sucker for good food blogs. At the moment, it’s definitely Averie Cooks and Minimalist Baker. Even when I don’t have the time to bake a lot at the moment, I love looking at the great food photography and drooling all over my laptop at the same time.

A few of your current favourites?

Right now I’m in love with audiobooks. Don’t get me wrong. I love my bookshelf and all of my beautiful printed copies, but during my travels it’s really convenient to listen to an audiobook from time to time. Just a few days ago I finished Tina Fey’s “Bossypants” and right now I’m listening to Mindy Kaling’s book “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?”.

Also, I recently stumbled across an interesting brand called Pacifica Beauty in our local bio store in Athens, where I’m currently living. So far I’ve never found a perfume that is 100% vegan, cruelty-free and that I also liked at the same time, but after smelling these incredible fragrances, I instantly fell in love.

What is to come on your blog in the future?

So far, Color Castles is still an experiment to me. I don’t really know in which direction I’m heading. I want to try to find a niche I’m really comfortable with, on the other hand, I like writing about a lot of stuff at the same time. So god only knows what comes next. But I definitely want to try to make it much more personal and to use more of my own photographs again. These goals should be easily achievable.
