Caring For Candles & Cacti
Two of my favourite things are; candles and cacti. The two need a lot of TLC for them to flourish to their full potential. So today I'm sharing with you a small guide to caring for cacti and candles.
CANDLES
You may be thinking huh? Why are you telling me I need to care for my candles? Well, if you had said this to me a couple of years ago then I would have been thinking the exact same thing. Turns out it's not as easy as just lighting them and letting them fill the room with their sweet aroma. Oh no. Here are a few tips to get the most of your candles:
- Trim the wick to a short length with every single use, don't go too short, though.
- And only trim the wick whilst it's still warm otherwise it may crack and split.
- Allow to burn till the top layer of wax has completely melted.
- Don't burn for short amounts of time, this will cause the candle to only burn down the centre and tunnel.
- Recenter the wick so it doesn't leave a black mark all around the edge when burning.
- Always put the candle on something that can handle the heat so you don't damage any surfaces.
CACTI
I hold my hands up. I've managed to kill more than one cactus in my time and it took me a while to learn how to look after them properly.
- Repot every 6 months.
- Don't over water them, only when the soil is dry.
- Place them in an area that gets sunlight but not too much, they can burn [especially succulents].
- As your cacti grows, change its pot so it has more room to grow.
- Don't move them around too much, this can cause trauma to the plant.
- Be careful when making a DIY holder, make sure it has drainage.
- Don't move them from a cold environment to a warm one.
- They only need lightly misting in the winter.
- It's normal for them to look a little sad during that time too as they are used to a warmer climate.
- Special cactus soil is better than regular soil so bear this in mind when repotting.
